Background

As more students transition into remote and self-directed learning, questions arise about how isolation affects belief formation, cognitive framing, and emotional language.

What We Built

We conducted a mixed-methods study of students engaged in self-study across 8–12 weeks, tracking vocabulary usage, emotional expression, and self-reported understanding shifts.

Modeling & Research

Qualitative data was collected from student journaling, reflection prompts, and text analysis tools. Shifts were evaluated using emotional tone classifiers and lexical diversity metrics.

Impact

The project reveals that prolonged isolated learning often amplifies internal feedback loops, which can lead to overconfidence or fixation. Findings suggest a need for structured social checkpoints in self-directed education systems.

Outcome

Under review for publication in Curieux Journal (2025). Presented at NSRI’s Humanities Research Roundtable.
